For a market of under 100,000 people, the bet is that connectivity and stability, not domestic demand, are what fill the racks.
NigeriaEquinix, Kasi, Nxtra by Airtel and OADC are all building close to the eight subsea landing stations on Lagos Island, buying short routes to international capacity and access to cooling water. Nigerian capacity is expected to move from about 64MW to roughly 200MW by 2027, second on the continent behind Johannesburg.
ACE Gabon agreed to act as landing party for the Medusa system at Port-Gentil, taking on operations and maintenance across the cable’s expected 25-year life and holding rights on the trunk. Cabo VerdeCV Telecom opened bidding on six new submarine segments totalling about 750km to replace end-of-life inter-island fibre, the first project in a Connectivity 2.0 package co-financed by the European Investment Bank at over €80m. Works were set to start in August 2025 and commission by June 2026, ahead of 5G rollout across the islands.
Paratus completed a 1,890km link from Johannesburg to Swakopmund through Botswana, connecting into the Equiano cable it lands in Namibia and giving 123ms to Lisbon. It is an alternative to routing everything through Cape Town, which is what turns a landing station into a transit position.
SeychellesIntelvision landed the 2Africa cable at Mahé in April 2023 in partnership with Vodafone, adding over 600Gbps of international capacity under a 15-year deal worth about $32m. It gives the islands a third independent route alongside SEAS and PEACE, which is the difference between resilient and single-threaded connectivity.
